Same Genre, Different Games

We believe DMZ coming back is good news. The original DMZ arrived in 2022 with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, built a loyal following, and stopped getting updates at the end of 2023. Modern Warfare 4 brings it back as a full mode, and more people discovering that moment where you decide whether to trust a stranger is good for everyone making extraction games.

Both games share the extraction loop: drop in, grab what you can, get out alive or lose it. Past that, they're built for different players, different devices and different evenings.

A Standalone Game vs a Mode Inside Call of Duty

DMZ is one part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, next to the campaign and multiplayer. If you already play Call of Duty, that's a real advantage: your habits and your squad come with you.

MISFITZ is the whole game. Every system serves the run: the maps, the loot, the extraction points and the people you meet on the way. You don't need to own anything else to play it, and it's free.

Short Runs vs Long Deployments

A MISFITZ run usually lasts 2.5 to 7 minutes. There's no timer: push for a fast extract, or stay and stack loot while the risk grows every minute. It's built for the gaps in a day: a bus ride, a break between classes, the queue for coffee.

DMZ is built for sitting down with a squad. Deployments are longer, with story missions, operations and side objectives, and a Forward Operating Base between runs where you craft, manage a stash and level your operators. It's a bigger commitment, and for a lot of players that's exactly the point.

Players, Trashbots and Relics

In DMZ, rival squads are one threat among many. AI forces escalate from patrols up to tanks and helicopters, and a lot of the tension comes from surviving the map itself.

A MISFITZ run is built from a few things at once: the Relics you came for, Zero's Trashbots, everything you lose if you don't make the extraction point, and the people around you. Every run has 16 players. Drop in solo or with your crew, and any stranger can become a teammate. You team up, share the haul, watch each other's backs, and then someone has to decide what happens at extraction. Trust is optional, so it's incredibly valuable.

Realistic vs Stylized

DMZ is a realistic military shooter, played in first person, and it plays it straight. MISFITZ is stylized, top-down and funny. You play a neon-stained outsider breaking into Zero's streets. Zero is a powerful AI that locked culture away as Relics: songs, art, memories. Real Barcelona street art made it into the lobby, painted by the Graffiti Girl. The stakes are real. The tone is playful.

On Mobile

Modern Warfare 4's DMZ isn't on mobile. If you love Call of Duty and want its extraction mode on mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile's DMZ: Recon is the honest answer, and it's free.

MISFITZ is a different thing: built for mobile from day one. A top-down camera you can read at a glance, auto-aim made for touchscreens, and runs short enough to finish before your stop. For the rest of the mobile field, see every mobile extraction shooter, compared.

The Bottom Line

Pick DMZ if you have a console or a gaming PC, already play Call of Duty, and want long, tactical squad deployments in a realistic world. Pick MISFITZ if you want extraction on mobile, in runs of a few minutes, where the stories come from the people you met and the one who had your back at the extraction point. Same genre, very different games. Plenty of people will play both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DMZ on mobile?

Not the Modern Warfare 4 version. DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 from October 23, 2026, and you need the paid game to play it. On iOS and Android, Call of Duty: Mobile has its own free extraction mode, DMZ: Recon.

Is MISFITZ like DMZ?

Same genre, different game. Both are extraction: drop in, grab what you can, get out or lose it. DMZ is a squad-based PvPvE mode inside a realistic military shooter, with AI forces, story missions and a base between runs. MISFITZ is a standalone game built for mobile: 16 players, top-down, stylized, runs of 2.5 to 7 minutes, and alliances with strangers that can break at extraction.

Is MISFITZ free?

Yes. MISFITZ is coming free to iOS and Android, with in-app purchases. DMZ comes with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is a paid game.

Does MISFITZ have proximity chat like DMZ?

Not yet. MISFITZ has no voice chat right now, proximity or squad. We plan to add it later. For now, trust in MISFITZ plays out in what you do: who you team up with and who you share the haul with.
