Playing MISFITZ With Friends: The Lobby, Graffiti and Spectating

Graffiti that stays, a Testing Zone, spectating and chat: why we built the lobby as a place to hang out.

By Joan, Engineer at Antihero Studios

In MISFITZ, the social extraction game for mobile from Antihero Studios, playing with friends doesn't start when the run does. It starts in the lobby, a shared space where you can paint the walls, test characters together, watch a friend's run and chat, with other players around you the whole time. We believe the time between runs should feel like hanging out, not like waiting in a menu, and almost everything on this page exists because of that one belief.

In short

Yes, MISFITZ is built to play with friends. You can drop in together, or team up with strangers mid-run. Between runs, the lobby is a shared social space with see-through menus, room for one spray of your own, and a Testing Zone where you and your teammates can try characters and gear. Graffiti you spray in runs stays after you leave, you can spectate a friend's run, and the friends list has text chat with Antihero emojis.

What is the MISFITZ lobby?

The lobby is where you go between runs, and we built it to be a place rather than a loading screen. The idea behind it is simple: a space to share your progress with friends, connect with the people you've met in runs, and do it together instead of alone in a menu. It's also home to the piece the Graffiti Girl painted live at our playtest event, 3D-scanned into the game.

The MISFITZ Friends screen: tabs for In This Lobby, Friends, Met In Run, Requests, Blocked and Discord, and a list of players with Team Up, chat and Add friend buttons. Names are blurred.
Who's in your lobby, your friends and the players you met in runs: one tab apart.

Why are the menus see-through?

So you never leave the room. Almost every screen in MISFITZ has a semi-transparent background. If a whole family of Rays is hanging out in the lobby, or someone is doing something ridiculous behind you, you still see it while you're deep in a menu. It's a small detail with a big idea behind it: if the lobby is a social space, the menus shouldn't wall you off from it. For a lot of players, the game is where the hangout happens: here's why Gen Z plays together.

Can you spray graffiti in MISFITZ?

Yes, and it stays. You can paint graffiti on floors and walls whenever you want, and it doesn't disappear when you leave. That means you might drop into streets nobody has painted yet, or into streets other players have completely taken over. How much the place changes is up to the people playing in it. That persistence is the point. A tag that vanishes when the run ends is decoration. A tag that's still there when strangers walk past it is a message from someone who was here before them. Zero locked culture away. Painting its streets is a small act of taking some of it back.

Tags go on floors and walls, and they're still there after you leave.

Each player can place up to 10 tags on each map. Put down another and your oldest tag is replaced. Ten is where we drew the line between expression and chaos.

We built it because we're always looking for ways players can express themselves in the game, and because graffiti has been part of this studio's story since the Graffiti Girl. Drip, the reprogrammed Zero bot who paints in a constant stream, already did it for a living. Now everyone can.

Can you paint the lobby?

Yes, with one spray per player. When I showed the spraying, some players asked if they could paint the lobby too, so I made it happen. Everyone in the lobby gets one spray of their own.

One spray per player, right on the lobby floor.

What is the Lobby Testing Zone?

The Testing Zone is a space in the MISFITZ lobby for trying things before they count. Hop in with your teammates, swap your gear on the fly, try characters, practice combos and experiment as much as you like before you take any of it into a real run. It had been on our wishlist for a long time, and the community asked for it too. It's also part of a bigger goal: making the lobby a more social, interactive and useful place to hang out. (If you want to know what you're practicing for, here's a guide to Tricks and map mechanics.)

Can you spectate a friend in MISFITZ?

Yes. When a friend is in a run, you can watch it from their point of view. Maybe you're waiting for them to finish so you can drop in together, or maybe you want to learn from how they play. Either way, you can. So much of a run comes down to reading people, and watching a friend decide whether to trust a stranger is an education in itself.

Spectating a friend: tap in from your friends list and watch their run from their point of view.

Is there chat in MISFITZ?

Yes, text chat. In the lobby, the friends list has text chat, and we rebuilt the friends list and the chat with a new interface to match the rest of the game. Typing Antihero emojis was the one thing I really wanted in: start typing a name after a colon and pick from the suggestions. MISFITZ has no voice chat of any kind yet, neither squad voice nor proximity voice, and we plan to add it later. Our FAQ covers playing with friends in short form.

How do your friends get MISFITZ?

Tell them to sign up. There's no date yet, so each of you leaves an email at antiherostudios.com/playtest and hears from us the moment it's out. MISFITZ will be free, with crossplay between iOS and Android.

Why the lobby matters

The run is where trust gets tested. The lobby is where it gets built. You spray your tag, you try a combo with a friend, you watch them play, and then you drop in together, and at the extraction point you both find out what that trust was worth. That's the game we wanted to make: one where the people are the point, and the space between runs is worth showing up for. If you're comparing, here are other mobile games to play with friends.
