Every competitive game you've ever played has the same premise: here are the rules, here is what winning looks like, now go. Extraction shooters threw that out. They dropped you into a world full of valuable things and dangerous people and said, "Leave whenever you want. If you can."
An extraction shooter is a multiplayer game where you enter a map, collect valuable loot, and must reach an extraction point to keep it. Die and you lose everything. Escape from Tarkov (PC, 2017) did the most to define the genre, which now spans PC, console and mobile. On mobile you can play Arena Breakout and the extraction modes in Delta Force, Call of Duty: Mobile (DMZ: Recon) and The Division Resurgence. MISFITZ by Antihero Studios, a social extraction game built for mobile, is coming free to iOS and Android: top-down, runs of 2.5 to 7 minutes, real loss on death. The MISFITZ Alpha is complete.
The Feeling
Unlike a battle royale, an extraction shooter has no single winner: everyone who reaches an extraction point with their loot keeps it. The tension comes from what you stand to lose, which turns every encounter into a decision about how much risk you can live with.
Forget mechanics for a second. The thing that makes extraction different is a feeling. You're carrying something valuable. Your pockets are full. The extraction point is three blocks away. And you just heard footsteps.
That's it. That's the whole genre. Everything else, the loot tables, the AI enemies, the maps, the guns, exists to create that one moment where you have something to lose and you have to decide what to do about it. Leave now with what you have, or push deeper for something better and risk losing all of it. Not "lose a life" lose it. Lose it for real. Someone else picks it up off your body and takes it home.
Battle royales ask "can you be the last one standing?" That's a test. Extraction shooters ask "how much is enough?" That's a mirror. And the answer changes every time, because the person you run into in the next room might want to help you or might want to kill you, and you won't know until it's too late. For the longer version, read extraction vs battle royale.
How We Got Here
Escape from Tarkov is usually called the first extraction shooter: it did the most to define the genre after its 2017 launch, and Hunt: Showdown grew it from 2018. ARC Raiders took it mainstream after launching in October 2025, and Bungie's Marathon followed in March 2026. What started as a niche, hardcore PC format now spans PC, console and mobile.
In 2017, a small Russian studio called Battlestate Games released Escape from Tarkov in beta and accidentally started a movement. Tarkov was demanding, with a steep learning curve, and players couldn't stop playing it. Because the risk was real, everything else felt real too. Your hands shook during firefights. You remembered specific raids weeks later. The game proved something the industry had forgotten: when you can actually lose, winning actually means something.
Crytek's Hunt: Showdown arrived in 2018 and proved the extraction loop wasn't limited to military realism. Set in the gothic swamps of 1890s Louisiana, it paired bounty hunting with permadeath and showed that atmosphere could carry the tension just as well as tactical sim mechanics. The bayou wanted you dead as much as the other players did.
Then the genre went mainstream. ARC Raiders launched on PC and console on 30 October 2025 and topped Google's 2025 Year in Search list of trending games, and the question that followed it everywhere was whether there would be an ARC Raiders on mobile (none has been announced). Bungie revived its classic Marathon series as an extraction shooter, released in March 2026. Escape from Duckov made you a duck in a solo, PvE take on the loop and proved it works even when nothing about the game is serious, because the emotional core, the greed and the fear, is always serious. Extraction had gone from a niche obsession to a genre everyone was talking about.
What Is an Extraction RPG?
An extraction RPG keeps the extraction loop (go in, loot, get out alive or lose it all) but swaps the gunplay for role-playing: character classes, melee and magic, and gear that defines your build. The action-heavy ones get called extraction ARPGs. Dark and Darker, a fantasy dungeon crawler from IRONMACE, is the best-known example.
The label matters less than the loop. Whether you're carrying a rifle or a sword, the question is the same: how much are you willing to lose? MISFITZ sits on the shooter side, with top-down combat and auto-aim, and the loot you're really after is Relics, a collection you build one extraction at a time.
Why Now
Extraction shooters are popular in 2026 because they put real consequence back into multiplayer: every item you find and every player you meet carries stakes. Extraction games also create stories players actually retell, and that's how new players find them.
Here's what consequence feels like in practice. Your time in a run matters. What you find matters. Whether you trust this stranger matters. Every decision about whether to push or extract carries weight, and nobody has to tell you whether you had a good time. You know, because you either walked out with something or you didn't.
The stories are what spread it. A ranked win feels great in the moment. The story people tell at lunch is the time they teamed up with a stranger, cleared the hardest zone together, split the loot fairly, and then got shot in the back at the extraction point by the third player who hadn't said a word the entire run. Those stories travel. They get shared. They bring new players in. No ad spend required. It's also why we believe in building a gaming brand players want to belong to.
The Mobile Question
Mobile extraction in 2026 comes in two shapes: dedicated extraction games, and extraction modes inside bigger shooters. Both are worth knowing.
On PC and console, the genre is established. Tarkov for the purists, ARC Raiders for the community-driven crowd, Hunt for the atmosphere chasers. There are real choices, and we rank them in the best extraction shooters of 2026.
Mobile has real choices too. Arena Breakout is the dedicated, Tarkov-style option, with tens of millions of players and longer raids. Delta Force launched in 2024 with Operations, its extraction mode, alongside Warfare, and has been on mobile worldwide since April 2025. Call of Duty: Mobile added its DMZ: Recon extraction mode in December 2025, and The Division Resurgence brought the Dark Zone to mobile in March 2026. PUBG: Black Budget, Krafton's PC extraction game, ran two closed alphas before Krafton ended development in October 2026. For all of them side by side, see every mobile extraction shooter, compared.
We kept asking a different question: what does an extraction game look like when it's built around short runs, touch controls and the people you meet in it? Top-down, one joystick to move and one to aim, with auto-aim, and runs of 2.5 to 7 minutes. Our answer is MISFITZ: a social extraction game, designed for mobile from day one. 83,500+ playtesters joined the pre-alpha, and 80.5% of players who died started a new run. Think of it as the midpoint between ARC Raiders and Brawl Stars: the extraction tension and real loss of one, with the top-down, mobile-native design of the other. Short runs concentrate the stakes, they don't soften them.
More Than a Shooter Genre
Despite the name, extraction shooters are as much social games as combat games: every encounter is a decision about whether to cooperate with another player or go it alone. MISFITZ by Antihero Studios leans into that side of the genre: alongside collecting Relics and getting them to the extraction point, you decide which strangers to team up with.
The name "extraction shooter" can lead people astray. The shooting is the surface language. Underneath it are human questions. Do I trust this person? Do they trust me? Can we actually cooperate and both walk away richer? The guns just raise the stakes high enough to make the answers matter.
"Extraction is one of the most social genres in gaming. Greed and betrayal are game mechanics, which makes trust optional, and that's exactly what makes it so valuable."
Extraction is social not because it forces you to play with friends, but because every encounter with another player is a genuine decision about who they are and what you're willing to risk on that judgment. Few other genres ask that question every run.
That's why the genre changed everything. It stopped asking "who's the best player?" and started asking "what kind of player are you?" And that question never gets old. If you want to answer it on mobile, start with the best new and upcoming extraction games on mobile.
